2019 has been a wild ride for The Open Table. Five years ago, when The Open Table started, none of us could have ever imagined how healthy and vibrant this community would become. Over the course of these five years all of you helped shape the direction The Open Table is going, and many of you have led in various capacities to help ensure The Open Table stays the course. From facilitating dialogue at our gatherings to hitting the streets to ensure that justice is done, you all have helped to ensure that The Open Table continues to live deeper into its mission.
This past year, we have offered thousands of meals at our gatherings, and have discussed important topics like queer spirituality, the divine feminine, white fragility and racism, faith, mental health, poverty, ecology, sexuality, and other issues of concern to our community. In addition to this, we have led a number of book studies and retreats, and have trained over 2,000 people in how to organize to dismantle racism in their institutions. Our national denomination, PCUSA, has taken notice of our work, and we have gotten to welcome a number of church leaders as people want to see what we are building at The Open Table.
This work cannot continue without you. We have lots of great plans in store for 2020 as we seek to deepen our commitment to being a community of peace and reconciliation in a city divided. Thank you for the ways you have contributed to The Open Table community in 2019, and we look forward to the coming year as we continue to build a community that not only cares deeply about justice, but acts on it, recognizing that liberation cannot come until all are liberated from oppression. There is a lot of work to do, but we rest in knowing that our work is in line with a God who is always on the move and seeks to liberate all of creation from oppression.
Happy Holidays, from all of us at The Open Table.
